First aid for our four-legged travel companions

 

Hit by a car :

If the dog is not moving any more. In anticipation of the vet’s arrival, avoid cooling by covering the dog with survival foil (available from camping shops). This foil is also shiny and visible from a distance.  

Bites 

Dogs and other animals : clean the wound, disinfect and call the vet.

Insects and snakes : Before leaving, consult your vet concerning the possible dangers, specific precautions and medication. Danger of possible illness by insect bites ! ! !  

Vomiting  : Skip a meal, and give water.  
Burns : Rinse abundantly with cold water (shower, hose).  
Fever : Take the dog’s temperature. A dog has a fever from 39° C.  
Licking paws (incessantly) :

Clean thoroughly (bathe if necessary) ; check for injuries or any objects.

Poisoning :

Keep the packaging and/or a sample of the poison and give it to the vet.

If necessary he can contact the anti-poison center.  

Wounds :

Always clean well and disinfect, remove any objects (for instance pieces of broken glass).

If the bleeding persists, use an elastic tourniquet.

Children’s sock are very useful for wounds on the forepaw.  

Ticks :  Remove as soon as possible with special tweezers.  
Sunstroke : Put the dog in the shade immediately and spray abundantly with cold water.  

IMPORTANT REMARK : always see a vet if the symptoms persist or in the event of extensive injuries ! !
