Air Travel

Various airline companies allow dogs weighing up to 5 kg (10 pounds) in the cabin.

Larger dogs travel in the cargo hold in special cages you have to rent.

For long-haul flights it is best to give your dog ice instead of water to drink.

Ice does not evaporate as quickly and is resistant to air pockets and such.

Attention : first ask permission when you book.

Following is the information we received from a number of airlines :

Air France :

They allow dogs in the cabin weighing up to 5 kg (10 pounds) in a well-ventilated box, bag or basket.

It may not exceed a total surface of 1150 mm2 (452.7 square inches).

KLM :

Pets traveling in the cabin must be transported in a special animal bag that can be placed under the seat. The bag may not exceed the sizes of 430mm (16.9") X 310mm (12.2") X 200mm (7.8").

Under no circumstances whatsoever are animals allowed to be taken out of the bag during the trip.

The total weight of the bag and the dog may not exceed 4 kg (8 pounds).

Lufthansa :

Has an extremely animal-friendly policy. Their motto is : With our company your four-legged friends will be up and away safely. Or : some of our passengers express their appreciation by wagging their tails.

They also have a special travel insurance which covers veterinary interventions anywhere in the world for the duration of the trip. The animals must have had all necessary vaccinations before departure.

Lufthansa sells cages in various sizes in order to give the animals maximum comfort during the flight.
